May 14, 2017 - Mother's Day

As he [Jesus] said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:27-28
I think we hear these words of Jesus as a critique of the woman's comments and a dismissal of the significance of Mary as the mother of Jesus. But what if we set aside this thought for just a moment and try something else. Imagine after hearing the words, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed," Jesus looks at his mother, catches her eye, and with a smile says, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it." Rather than being dismissive, Jesus may be complimenting her. Taking nothing away from her role as his physical mother, He recognizes her faith and commends her for it, along with all those who hear God's Word and keep it.
Consider this: How did Mary respond after being told by an angel she would become pregnant by the Holy Spirit, and give birth to none other than the Son of God? She said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” She heard the word and kept it. What did Mary do after the shepherds arrived, worshiping Jesus and reporting what the angels said? "But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart." (Luke 2:19) She heard the word and kept it. What are Mary's last recorded words in the Bible? At the wedding at Cana, where Jesus did His first miracle, his mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he [Jesus] tells you.” (John 2:5) Mary commanded them to hear the word and keep it.
I choose to hear these words of Jesus as a complement rather than a dig and remember my mother and all godly mothers who have shown love and modeled faith. We are blessed because of you! Thank you mom for your love, care, encouragements and support. I can't imagine what life would be like without you. Happy Mother's Day.
Love,
Loren
